Ingredients
All you need are a few fresh produce ingredients combined with pantry staples to make the best mushrooms in the slow cooker. Here's a look at what you need:
- Mushrooms: This recipe works well with white, cremini, or baby bella mushrooms. Whole mushrooms are preferable but you can use sliced as long as you reduce the cooking time.
- White wine: Adds acidity and flavor to the mushrooms and the sauce that's created as the mushrooms cook. The alcohol in the wine will cook off as the mushrooms cook.
- Butter: This recipe has been tested using unsalted butter if all you have is salted butter adjust the amount of the salt by half. I love to add a bit more butter after the mushrooms are done and just before serving. It gives them a richer flavor.
- Seasoning: A blend of Italian herbs and fresh garlic simply, yet perfectly season the mushrooms while salt and pepper bring all the flavors together.
- Parsley: Optional but recommended for a splash of color.
The full list of ingredients and quantities of each one are in the recipe card further down the page.
Variations
- Spicy: If you want a bit of spice, add a pinch of chili pepper flakes along with the other seasonings.
- Alcohol-Free: If you prefer to skip the cooking wine you can use chicken broth which will add flavor but doesn't have acidity. Apple cider vinegar works well as it has a similar level of acidity as the wine.
- Creamy: Stir in a half cup of heavy cream at the end of cooking instead of extra butter.
How to Make Slow Cooker Mushrooms
Here's a look at the simple steps that go into making this recipe. Be sure to check the full details in the recipe card.
Step 1: Prepping the Mushrooms. Clean and dry the mushrooms. It's ok to rinse your mushrooms in a strainer to remove all the dirt. Just be sure to dry them very well before placing them in the slow cooker.
Step 2: Adding Ingredients. Place the mushrooms in the bottom of the slow cooker. Add the white wine and place the stick of butter on the top. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning, garlic, salt, and pepper on top.
Step 3: Cooking the Mushrooms. Cover the pot with the lid and cook on low for 3 hours.
Step 4: Serving Them Up. Transfer the mushrooms to a serving dish. If desired, toss in additional butter and top with fresh parsley before serving.
Serving Ideas
Crockpot mushrooms are great as a side dish for chicken, steak, or pork dinners.
- Main Dishes: Enjoy them as a side for these juicy Smoked Chicken Quarters or Smoked Chicken Legs. They also go great with your favorite grilled steak or these Ranch Pork Chops.
- Side Dishes: Looking for other side dish options to round out your meal? Try these Roasted Cabbage Steaks, Tomato Rice, or Oven Roasted Green Beans.
- Parties: Sometimes I cut the recipe in half and make the mushrooms in a mini slow cooker so I can keep them warm for a party or something. They make a great veggie add-on along with Cranberry Meatballs or Grilled Chicken Wings.
Expert Tips
- Using Sliced Mushrooms. Sliced mushrooms can be used but cooking time likely needs to be reduced and the flavor of sauce may be more intense.
- Dry Your Mushrooms. Mushrooms already hold a lot of water so removing excess water from rinsing will help the end result be more flavorful.
- More Flavorful Mushrooms. Baby bella or cremini mushrooms have more flavor than white button mushrooms.
- Storing: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container. I do recommend freezing them. Reheat them in a skillet on the stove over medium heat or in the microwave in 30-second intervals.
- Repurpose Leftovers: Crockpot mushrooms can also be sliced or chopped up and added to casseroles, sauces, pasta, or stuffed into quesadillas.
Recipe FAQs
The crockpot is an easy way to perfectly cook mushrooms. They cook slowly and you can check them until they're done to the texture you prefer. The key to keeping the sauce flavor and the mushrooms from becoming soggy is to make sure they are very dry before you start cooking.
Yes, definitely! Mushrooms grow in the dirt and tend to have dirt still clinging to them in the package. The easiest way to clean them is to rinse them quickly with cold water and then let them dry completely before cooking. I like to lay them out on a tea towel to drip dry and then lightly press a paper towel on top to absorb any extra liquid on the top.
