Ingredients
This recipe goes together with just six simple ingredients plus salt and pepper. Here's what you need.
- Brussels sprouts: Use fresh and be they're washed, trimmed, and halved.
- Garlic cloves: Flavors the oil while roasting, leave whole to prevent overcooking.
- Extra virgin olive oil: Helps cook the brussels sprouts to golden brown perfection.
- Salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper: Important for optimal flavoring.
- Honey: A touch of sweetness to balance out the spicy sriracha.
- Sriracha: Gives the dish heat and flavor!
See the recipe card for the exact quantities of each ingredient.
Substitutions
After testing this recipe several times, I think the above quantities are really well balanced. But if you need to make some changes, you can make the following substitutions.
- Brussels sprouts: You can leave them whole, or slice smaller but will need to adjust the cooking time.
- Whole garlic cloves: You can use minced if desired, but I would add the garlic halfway through roasting to prevent overcooking.
- Extra virgin olive oil: Swap it with your preferred cooking oil.
- Crushed red pepper: You can use cayenne or skip it completely for less heat.
- Honey: Agave, coconut nectar, or your favorite honey replacement work as well.
- Sriracha: Indonesian hot sauce is the most similar to sriracha, but you can also use Tabasco, Tapatio, el Yucateco, Louisiana hot sauce, peri-peri sauce, Jamaican jerk sauce, or Franks.
Equipment
After you have gathered your ingredients, you will want to get the following gear ready.
Instructions
The first step to making these delicious sweet and spicy brussels sprouts is to preheat the oven and prepare the baking sheet.
400 degrees F is the optimal temperature for roasting brussels sprouts. It's not so hot that it burns any single leaves, but it's hot enough to get that delicious golden brown crisp finish.
To prep the baking sheet, you can either spray with non-stick spray or line with non-stick aluminum foil for super easy clean-up.
While the oven is preheating, you can start prepping your sprouts.
Start by washing and drying the brussels sprouts thoroughly. Cut the end off and then slice in half. I have found that brussels sprouts cut in half cook very nicely.
Once the brussels sprouts are prepped, you will want to toss them in a large bowl with olive oil, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Make sure the brussels sprouts are coated well with the oil. It helps them brown and cooks up nicely.
Spread them out evenly in a single layer on the baking sheet and bake for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Pro Tip: Start roasting the brussels sprouts open side down for a deliciously perfect golden-brown finish.
While the brussels sprouts are roasting, you can prepare the simple honey sriracha sauce. You won't believe how easy this is to make!
Simply whisk up even portions of honey and sriracha and set them aside for when the brussels sprouts are done cooking.
Once the brussels sprouts are finished, remove the sheet pan from the oven and drizzle the sriracha honey sauce over the top of the roasted brussels sprouts.
Use a spatula to give them a toss and help evenly distribute the sauce.
Then serve up these siracha honey brussels sprouts!
Variations
I love honey sriracha brussels sprouts just the way they are but here are some ideas to change them up!
- Turn up the heat! Add extra red pepper flakes or a pinch of cayenne to turn things up a notch.
- Add some bacon. Add some protein and smoky flavor to the mix with the addition of bacon!
- Make them sweeter. Double the honey for brussels sprouts a little on the sweeter side.
Storage
Chances are, this delicious sweet and spicy roasted brussels sprouts side dish recipe will get completely devoured at meal time but if you happen to have leftovers you can store them in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container.
To reheat, you can use your microwave or give them a toss in a skillet over medium heat until warm.
These ingredients don't stand up well to freezing.
