Best Wine for Mimosas
Before we get started it's important to talk about what the best wine is to make mimosas.
There are three sparkling wine types you can use to make bubbly mimosa cocktails.
- Champagne: Champagne is commonly the beverage that most people automatically think of when it comes to making sparkling cocktails. Champgne brings a touch of minerality to the flavor of the mimosa but is also the most expensive option for making mimosas.
- Prosecco: One of my favorite sparkling wines when I'm mixing up mimosas. It delivers a delightful crisp finish that's light on the palate and a very fruity profile that combines perfectly with the orange juice and blue caracao in this green mimosa.
- Cava: This sparkling wine from Spain brings a more earthy flavor similar to Champagne, but has a little less of an acidic finish.
Ingredients
This super simple green cocktail requires just three ingredients. To make this recipe you will need:
- Champagne, Prosecco or Cava: Pick your favorite as any of these sparkling wine options will work when it comes to the bubbly you use to make green mimosas. Be sure to choose Brut or "dry".
- Orange Juice: Fresh is always best! If you do buy bottled orange juice, make sure it is not from concentrate.
- Blue Curacao: This blue citrus flavored liqueur get it's flavor from the peel of the Laraha citrus fruit (which has been dried) and is grown on the island of Curaçao, hence the name. It's vibrant blue coloring makes a simple food coloring to use in cocktails.
For the exact quantities of each ingredient, see the recipe card further down on the page.
Substitutions
If you want to enjoy this beverage but have health restrictions, here are some substitutes you can use.
- Sparkling Wine - To make a non-alcoholic green mimosa, you can use sparkling water instead of wine.
- Orange Juice - I recommend fresh squeezed, but bottled juice is fine if you need a shortcut. You can also use any other orange colored drink as a base.
- Blue Curacao: I love the combination of this citrus based liqueur with the orange juice and champagne, but if you don't have access to Blue Curacao you could use other orange liqueurs such as Triple Sec or Cointreau as a substitute, then add a few drops of blue food coloring to get that signature color. If you're going for a non-alcoholic green drink, you can add food coloring to get the same effect.
Equipment
Here are some of my favorite tools for making this green mimosa at home:
- Citrus juicer - This hand juicer is such a handy to to have!! The juicer is capable of squeezing citrus fruits of all sizes.
- Champagne Flutes- You don't need anything super fancy but I have this set of Amazon flutes and love them. There are lots of options available these days and you can choose a stemless option as well.
- Wine chiller or Ice bucket - These green mimosa's would be perfect to serve at a St. Patrick's Day cocktail party. I use it when I'm serving up green mimosas for a party. That way the ice bucket keeps everything cold for my guests.
How to Make Green Mimosas
This simple green cocktail is so easy to make.
Start by pouring the orange juice into your glass, about ⅓ of the way full.
Next, add just a splash of Blue Curacao and mix. You can adjust until you get the desired shade of green, but you want to aim for having the glass about half full of the orange juice and Blue Curacao mixture.
Finish the cocktail by topping with sparkling wine.
How to Serve Leprechaun Mimosas for a Crowd
Mimosas are the perfect easy cocktail to serve at parties because you can just set it out and allow guests to make their own. A nice touch is to set out the bottles of sparkling wine in a wine chiller or Ice bucket, the orange juice, and Blue Curacao mixed in a glass pitcher. Then next on the table I line up the glasses with a small bowl of garnishes on the side.
Alternatively, you can make the full batch in a pitcher using the 50/50 ratio of sparkling wine to the juice and Blue Curacao mixture. Just make sure you have a large stirring utensil available because the juice will settle to the bottom of the pitcher.
Garnishes
I styled these simply for this photo session, but these Leprechaun Mimosas have so much potential especially if you want to take things up a notch.
Here are some ideas for garnishes:
- Mint - Mint pairs excellent with orange and keeps with the green cocktail theme we have going.
- Orange Wedge - Really enhances the aromatics with each sip.
- Rainbow Straws - Serve with rainbow straws. Traditionally, mimosas are not served with straws ... but for a holiday with a rainbow theme, why not!
- Rainbow Sprinkles - Run the rim of your glass with an orange and dip into rainbow sprinkles.
- Sugar Rim - Use an orange around the rim of your glass and dip into granulated white sugar.
Storage
In most cases, green mimosas are best served immediately. However, if you happen to have any leftover mimosa ingredients, it is best to store them separated. If you properly seal the sparkling wine, it will keep its bubbles for up to 48 hours.
Unfortunately, if you mixed the sparkling wine with the orange juice, it won’t last that long.
Expert Tips and FAQS
- Use fresh squeezed orange juice for best flavor. It's a little more work but well worth the effort.
- Add the orange juice and Blue Curacao to the glass first to make sure you get the right shade of green.
- Chill the sparkling wine and juice before making green mimosas.
- Use "brut" or dry sparkling wine when making these green drinks for St. Patrick's Day.
- Have fun with garnishes to give this St. Patricks Day cocktail some extra fun flare.
No mimosas aren't usually served with ice because the ice will water down the drink and ruin the flavor. Be sure all the ingredients are well chilled before mixing them and you won't need to ice them.
All you need to do is swap out the sparkling wine with sparkling water instead when making an alcohol-free mimosa. Don't forget a few drops of food coloring to get the desired shade of color you want for your festive mimosa.
A classic champagne flute or stemless champagne glass is the traditional glassware for mimosas but if you don't have these you can easily get away with using a stemmed wine glass too!
